Nathan Peterman has chance to start for Bills

Buffalo Bills

Most NFL observers assumed the race to be Buffalo’s starting QB was between A.J. McCarron and Josh Allen. Evidently, Nathan Peterman is also involved.

If you thought Nathan Peterman’s interception-riddled 2017 cameo was enough to remove him from the Buffalo Bills’ plans, you were wrong. Reports emanating from Buffalo actually claim Peterman has a legitimate chance to enter the season as the team’s starting quarterback.

Joe Buscaglia of WKBW in Buffalo is reporting that both Peterman and Allen significantly outplayed McCarron in day two of the team’s minicamp. That sort of thing can happen in the preseason. Ordinarily, it’s not something to get worked up over. However, Buscaglia also claims that anyone who doesn’t think Peterman has a legitimate chance to win the starting job is “sorely mistaken.”

In fairness to Buscaglia, he follows that comment up by admitting that things can look much differently when play picks up in the actual preseason. Even so, the idea that Peterman could emerge as Buffalo’s starting quarterback in Week 1 is a pretty startling notion.

After all, the team spent significant assets to bring in two other quarterbacks this offseason. Allen was acquired with a first round pick and McCarron was signed to a moderate deal in free agency. Both moves were crystal clear signals that the team’s front office didn’t believe Peterman was the guy moving forward.

Nothing about his play in 2017 would have inspired any confidence. He played in four games for the Bills and managed to throw five interceptions in just 49 passing attempts. That helped contribute to his less than stellar QBR of just 12.1. Peterman did nothing to make anyone believe he’s capable of being an NFL starter.

Unless he’s undergone unprecedented improvement this offseason Bills fans need to hope that the idea of him winning the starting job is just noise. If he’s under center to start the year this team is headed absolutely nowhere. Well, nowhere except the top of the 2019 NFL Draft order.
